"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -----Benjamin Franklin
Kids at Highland Park Elementary, Columbia, Tennessee, learned about critically endangered tigers through Painting With Pat's program 'Endangered Species Awareness'.
The Tiger is one of the planet's most iconic species but its rapid decline--at the hands of man--has brought it to the very edge of extinction. The kids are using their 'voice' through 'ART' to raise awareness in their community and across the world to save this precious 'Big CAT' !!
The catastrophic decline is the rusult of over-hunting, a rapidly increasing human population encroaching on tiger habitats and an insatiable demand for tiger skins as souvenirs and body parts for use in taditional Chinese medicine.
Humans are the only race capable of wiping out an entire species-----WE are also their only hope!
Pat says, 'We give kids the opportunity to fall in love with the wildlife first,...... then we ask them to save it!'

The kids at Highland Elementary were inspired by viewing and learning about the Tigers at the Australia Zoo!
One tiger especially, Juma, a 7 year old Sumatran Tiger. Born 1/1/2004! Juma is an Indonesian word for Mountain Summit. A fitting name for an animal equally as powerful and stunning!
With a little help from Pat drawing the Tiger, the kids matched up tile color to the beautiful colors of the Sumatran Tiger! Tigers have unusual eye color! Each stripe on the tiger is different from any other tiger! As each tile was laid, the kids grew closer and closer to the Tiger! They learned what type of habitat was needed for the Tiger to survive, what part of the world they live in, what food and how much they needed to stay alive, and they also learned that each Tiger is an individual, with their own personalities. Some tigers are playful, some have a very serious nature and some are laid back, like Juma!
Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors has a great tiger conservation program. Tiger conservation is more critical now than ever, with less than 400 Sumatran tiger believed to remain in the wild.
Their tiger conservation program includes:
  • Supporting anti-poaching patrols, known as the Tiger Conservation and Protection Units
  • Training of key field personnel and providing vital equipment for the TCPU's
  • Offering practical solutions to reduce human-tiger conflict
  • Educating locals on environment and wildlife protection
  • Working to help reduce the local villagers' dependency on the forest and provide alternative sources of income.
