(Limited to maximum of 35 students)
(Workshop takes approx. 6 hours to complete, usually it is conducted during regular school hours taking the place of a science or biology class or as a afterschool program.)
**Junior Duck Stamp ( Our Most Popular Workshop) (Grades 1 - 12)
(Program may be adjusted to different grade level classes.)
A dynamic art and science program designed to teach conservation to students using scientific and wildlife observation principles.The students will communicate visually what they have learned by creating a watercolor painting and submit it as an entry to the Junior Duck Stamp art contest. Students will enhance observation skills, color mixing skills, watercolor application techniques, drawing skills and gain a better understanding of the art elements and principles.
The class is aligned with TN State Standerds and structured in a manner so it can be conducted during a science class period as part of the students' regular class period school day.
Growing Up Green Program (Grades 1 - 12 to adult)
Great activity for Summer Camps, Boys & Girl Scout Troops and School Science & Art Classes
The Growing Up Green Program is a cross curriculum art workshop that introduces children to plants, animals and insects found in their own backyard!
It addresses the need for children to; 'get up, get moving, get reconnected to nature, wildlife, and the environment'!!
The workshop series is divided up into sections to allow media diversity and advancement of skills. The sections can be conducted as individual, one day workshops or a complete series incorporating all sections. The workshop is designed to utilize the school yard walking trails or nearby nature centers.

*Stop, Drop, and Draw! School yard Safari (Grades 6 - 12 to adult)
This project builds on awareness and moves the student towards understanding.
Children develop knowledge and skills as they undertake the exciting challenge of
drawing what they see!
Art medium: pencil, drawing paper or drawing journal
Workshop starts in the classroom with a discussion:
'Who are our backyard neighbors?
Describe your backyard's color, textures, and sounds!
Activity 1: Students will construct a 3" x 3" view finder
Activity 2: Students will take their view finders, drawing paper or drawing journal and go on a School Yard Safari locating objects of nature through their view finders.
When instructed the students will, Stop, Drop, (drop the view finder) and Draw what they see within the frame of the view finder. Instructor will monitor and adjust, (give advise where necessary), student activity.
**Printmaking From Nature (Grades 1 -12)
Printmaking from Nature program creates an awareness and a deep appreciation for the precious
plants and animals that live on the earth with hands-on, adventurous,exciting art applications.
Art media: colored pencils, crayons, soft leaded pencils, paper or drawing journal
Students will be introduced to the vocabulary: print block, print, rubbings, texture, collage
Students will take a hike on the nature trail or outside playground or nature center field trip,
discovering and discussingdifferent textures they encounter in nature.
Students will collect several textures from a variety of natural sources: tree bark, rocks, leaves, etc. with
a variety of art media. In the classroom the prints (rubbings) will be assenbled in a collage.
**The Unseen World (Grades 6 - 12)
An exciting, engaging two part art workshop that covers a wide range of skills, including math and physical science, vocabulary and allows the students to think three dimensionally, teaching towards the whole child development by not teaching the child what to think, but how to think. Students build character traits of responsibility and teamwork.
Art Media: plaster, paint, molds, drawing paper or drawing journal
Students will discuss small animals, plants, and insects that they might encounter in their
own backyards, on a nature walking trail or a nature park trail.
Students will go on a nature walk looking for small animals, plants, non-threatening insects, and plants.
Students will make a sketch of their encounters.
Students will return to the classroom or work area and discuss their findings and share their drawings.
Instructor will explain the differences between one dimensional, drawings, two dimensional, shapes and forms.
Instructor will explain the method and steps in mixing plaster and creating a cast.
Students will be introduced to the art tools they will be using along with the art media.
Art Vocabulary: negative space, positive space, texture, form, shape, liquids, solids, cast, molds
Instructor will discuss the physical change the plaster goes through to become a solid.
Students will be engaged and able to recognize the change physically, visually, and with the 'heat phase' the sense of touch. (The plaster will feel a little warm).
Students will create a cast and paint his/her creation.
**Introductory Mosaic - Paper Quilt Mosaic (Grades 1 - 12)
Introductory level class that teaches design techniques, geometry, new vocabulary and contruction of paper media mosaics.
Art media: various cut pieces of colored paper
Tools: scissors, glue, paper
Activity: Students will create 'Paper Quilt Mosaic'
**Cool Nature Mosaic Coasters (Grades 6 - 12 to Adult)
A thought provoking project with a focus on nature. A hike on the school nature trail or a trip to the nearest nature center will inspire colors from nature to be used within the coaster coaster design. Students awareness will also be hightened while looking and recording shapes and/or designs from nature!
Art media: tiles
Tools: glue, grout
Activity: Students will create a mosaic coaster with a nature theme.
**Environmental Friendly Stepping Stones (Grades 5 - 12 to Adult)
A functional art form that require decision-making skills of design that propels the student to apply knowledge of previous mosaic projects. A unique opportunity of active learning that instills a sense of accomplishment.
Art media: ceramic tiles
Tools: form, grout, glue
Activity: Students will design and create a functional, environmental design friendly mosaic stepping stone.
**Kreative Kandles ( Adult Workshops)
A very informative candle making workshop for adults. The workshop covers the history of candles and candle making, introduction of tools, containers, various waxes, wicks, and scents. Tips and techniques in making the perfect candle, such as removing air bubbles, mold releases, and wax temperatures.
Participates will create three candles honeycomb, crystal, and poured.
**Who Went This Way? (Grades 1 - 12 to Adult)
An adventurious, totally engaging workshop that takes the kids on a field trip down a nature trail, into a wild natural cover field or into the woods. Students are looking for animal tracks and asking the question,
' Who Went This Way?' Students will used math skills for measuring the dry plaster and water components.
Observation skills, and team work is advanced. Students will use manuals as a source
to identify the animal tracks they encounter. Notes are taken, sketches are drawn and the plaster casts are
retrieved and taken back to the classroom for further observation!
**Junior Photo Safari (Grade 1 - 5) The participate is required to have their own camera for this workshop
'Junior Photo Safari' is a workshop that takes the junor photographer beyond the walls to photograph in the 'wild'! The workshop utilizes the nature walking trail or nature park environment. The camera's view finder connects the young photographer to nature and wildlife capturing a moment in time. Students will later assemble their photographs as a collage.
**Handmade Paper Journals (Grades 1 - 12) Fall is a good season to conduct this activity.
Students will learn the techniques of creating handmade paper to form a journal with a nature twist!
Students will first go on a hike and where allowable, collect dried grasses, dried flowers, and dried leaves.
Students will return to the classroom and make their papers from nature's media, creating a unique nature journal. This is a great activity to do prior to the 'Junior Photo Safari' Photos may be placed in the handmade
journals for an even more creative presentation!
