2009 - 2010 Growing Up Green (GUG) Grant Series Art Projects
Blue Bird Boxes Depicting Community Characteristics
This project is a three-part adventure. Students will begin this project by learning about the blue bird species and its habitat. Second, the students will visit the historic sites throughout the county and learn about the significance of the historic events. Third, the students will create a 3 dimensional blue bird box and decorate the box with images that make reference to the history of the county and things that make the county home for the children and all its residents. When complete the blue bird boxes willl be erected throughout the county at designated places. The project engages the whole community, with cross curriculum learning weaving through science, social studies, math and art, linking home, school, community heritage with the arts.
Claymation Metamorphosis (Art + Science + Technology)
Starting with a storyboard plan, students will build characters and film their actions one frame at a time with a digital camera. The frames will then be assembled in a software program and played in succession without time lapse between them to make a movie. this project connects visual problem solving with a familiar scientific theme- metamorphosis of a butterfly or frog.
Students will learn to communicate their ideas and imagery through a visual technique popular with mass media.
Students will gain an understanding of the planning and production required for claymation animation.
Students will be able to connect their ideas and visual art skills to communications in other subjects, such as math, science and literature.
Mosaic Wildlife Extinction Awareness
Our young people of today will be the care-takers of tomorrow. This art project is rich with science knowledge, geography, heritage, community and state engagement potential. The students will understand a plant or animal becomes extinct when the last living individual of its species dies, causing it to vanish from the earth forever. The students will be made aware of a global species that is on the fast tract to extinction is the green turtle. and to bring the reality of extinction right to their state of Tennessee,  they will be introduced to the red wolf, with only 196 individuals remaining.
The students will create a huge mosaic of the animal of their choice, (green turtle or red wolf) which can be incorporated in the decor of the school environment.
Paper Making Backyard Journals
Our projects are always environmentally friendly. We teach students that recycling is fun as they transform ordinary srape paper into beautiful creative handmake sheets of paper. The paper is then turned into student backyard journals. A field trip will be the next step in this adventurous project to record thoughts, document sightings of wildlife and artistic interpretations of wildlife.

Mosaic Stepping Stones
A thought provoking project with a focus on nature. A hike to the school nature trail or green space will inspire colors from nature to be used within the stepping stone designs. Students' awareness will also be hightened while observing and recording shapes and/or designs from nature!
A functional art form that require decision making skills of design that propels the student to apply knowledge of art elements and principles. A unique opportunity of active learning that instills a sense of accomplishment.
The Unseen World
The unseen World is a collection of interesting critters from our own backyards that most people don't take the time to notice in their native habitat, unless the critter makes itself known.
Students will understand the concept of the three dimensional art element: 'form' by the art process of casting. The students will discover specific species characteristics of selected inhabitants of the 'unseen world. making a connection to the wildlife great and small that share their backyard.
